My Family Tree

When creating a Family Tree page for a baby book, display the names of your baby’s family in the shape if a tree. An easy way to create a family tree is to use your computer.

Here’s how you create a family tree using text boxes in Microsoft Word.

First open Microsoft Office Word. Then click on “Insert” on your toolbar at the top of the screen. Then scroll down until you see “Text Box”. After you click on “Text Box”, click on a blank page and create a box by dragging the cursor across the page.

You can resize the box to suit the size of box you require. Copy and paste that box so that you have one box at the bottom of the page and ten boxes above it in the shape of a family tree.

Start by inserting baby’s name in the bottom box and then the names of parents, grandparents and great grandparents above.

On the left side of the family tree insert the names on the paternal side of your baby’s family:

Growing

You can create a page to document baby’s growth in a number of ways. One option is to have four columns and head the columns with Date/Age/Height/Weight. Leave blank lines under each column to fill out as your baby grows.

Another option is to have three columns, one column labeled “Age” and the second and third columns labelled “Weight” and “Height/Length”. Under the Age column list the following ages Birth, One Month, Two Months etc down the column. Leave the weight column blank to be filled out as your baby grows.

I prefer the first option where you can fill your baby’s details in at any age. I didn’t visit the child health nurse every month with my second child and I rarely visited right on the day my children reached each monthly milestone.

Baby photo ideas for this page:

  • Various photos of baby at various stages of their first year- perhaps a photo at birth, three months, six months, nine months and one year.

    Favorites

    Question prompt ideas:

    • Your Favorites, My Favorites, Baby’s Favorites

I’m not a big fan of having one “Favorites” page in a baby book. Baby’s have different favorite things during their first year so it is hard to answer the questions. I think it is better to have a page for each month of your baby’s first year and talk about your baby’s favorites on that page.

Here are some question prompt ideas for a “Favorites” page:

    • Favorite toys...
    • Favorite games...
    • Favorite activities...
    • Favorite songs...
    • Favorite books...
    • Favorite TV shows...
    • Favorite time of day...
    • Favorite places to go...
    • Favorite activities with Mom and Dad...
    • Favorite person...
    • Other favorites...

    Baby photo ideas:

    • Baby enjoying favorite activities

One Month Old, Two Months Old etc

In addition to creating baby memory book pages that summarise one aspect of your baby’s life, for example, a “Firsts” page, a “Favorites” page you may like to include pages that documents your baby on the anniversary of their birth each month of their first year.

On the day your baby turns one month old, two months old etc you could include a page of journaling that tells a story about your baby.

Here are some prompts to write about on the anniversary of your child’s birth each month:

    • Date
    • Height
    • Weight
    • Sleeping Patterns – how often is baby waking
    • Eating Habits – what food is baby eating at the moment eg. breastmilk only, tried pureed vegetables this month, eating meat now etc
    • Development - what is baby doing eg rolling over, sitting up, just took first steps etc
    • Mischief – what is baby getting up to eg. climbing into dishwashers, pulling things out of cupboards, putting all the toilet rolls into the bath!
    • Cute things baby is doing
    • Talking – record any words baby is saying
    • Favorites eg toy, book, nursery rhymes, food etc

Each month you might like to write a day in the life of your baby. Write down when your baby woke up, what you and your baby did during the day, when baby had a nap, what baby played with, what baby had to eat and when baby went to sleep at night.

At the end of each month, print the photos you took of your baby during the month and add a selection to your baby’s memory book.

Baby photo ideas for each month of your baby’s life:

    • Your baby with a teddy bear or other soft toy on the day of your baby’s birth each month so you can see baby’s growth
    • Do a photo shoot each month, dress your baby up in their best clothes and get some cute photos. You can put the best photo taken each month next to your journaling at the beginning of month.
    • Your baby with people he or she met during the month
    • Your baby at places you visited during the month
    • Baby playing and doing things at home eg. playing with toys, reading, pulling things out of cupboards (when baby is on the move!) etc
    • Baby sleeping
    • Baby eating
    • Baby in the bath
    • Baby on the move eg. rolling, crawling, cruising, first steps, walking with assistance, walking etc
    • Professional baby photos/ portraits
    • A day in the life of your baby – you could take photos from the time your baby wakes up to the time he or she goes to sleep at night.

Remember to get a mix of impromptu and posed shots of your baby.

    How you changed

    Baby photo ideas:

    • Choose one photo of baby each month of their first year and create a page so you can see how baby has grown

Hope the above information helps you decide what topics and questions you would like to include when you make your own baby book.
