A Baby Photo Album is the perfect way to display cute baby photos

A baby photo album with slip-in photo pockets is an easy and cost effective way to display and preserve your baby’s photos. Here are some things to consider when buying a baby album with photo pockets.

Album Color

When you choose a baby photo album consider what color you would like the cover to be. You may want the cover to be a gender specific color and choose pink for a baby girl photo album or blue for a baby boy photo album. Perhaps you would prefer a gender neutral color such as pale yellow or choose traditional black.

What color photo album do you prefer?

Baby photo size

Before buying a baby photo album consider the size of the baby pictures you want to store in the album. The standard photo size is 4” x 6” (10 x 15cm) and therefore the majority of photo albums are designed for that photo size. However, it is possible to find photo albums that store 3 1/2 x 5, 5x5, 5x7, 8x10 photos and panoramic photos. Some photo albums allow you to store different sizes photos in the same album.

What is the size of the baby pictures you want to store?

Number of photos you want to store Consider also the number of photos you want to store and display in an album. If you have a lot of photos of your baby (or plan to take a lot of photos) and intend to print and display most of them in a photo album then you will need an album that stores a lot of photos (or perhaps you will need to buy a couple of photo albums!).

If you plan to print out just your favorite baby photos then you may just need a smaller album or brag book to include your favorites.

How many photos do you want to store in the photo album?

Use of Album

Consider also where you want to view the photos in your baby's photo album. Is the album for carrying with you in your bag eg a brag book or for looking at on the sofa at home?

Number of photos on each page

Consider also how many photos you want to see on each page.

Most baby photo albums show two or three horizontal photos on the page. It is possible however to buy photo albums that hold more photos on each page, for example six horizontal photos.

Orientation of photos Consider also the orientation of your baby's photos. Are they mainly horizontal (landscape), vertical (portrait) or a bit of both?

Most baby photo albums on the market display photos horizontally which means that you will have to turn your album sideways to look at your vertical (portrait) photos.

Another option is a photo album with bi-directional pages. These photo album pages have photo pockets or photo sleeves that display both vertical and horizontal photos on the one page.

You might also consider a ring binder photo album where you can choose the type of photo pages that suit the particular photos you want to display.

These albums include photo pocket pages for vertical photos only, horizontal photos only or a mix of both vertical and horizontal. You can also choose photo pockets that take different sized photos. I love this type of photo album as it gives you maximum flexibility when displaying your photos!

Binding style of album

Consider also the album binding style you prefer.

Photo albums with photo pockets are either book bound, spiral bound, ring bound or post bound. The benefits of ring bound or post bound albums are that you can move the pages around and add refills when you require more pages.

Do you want to have the flexibility of changing the order of the photo album pages or add more pages?

Photo details

Consider also whether you would like to write notes about the photos you include in your baby's photo album.

If you would like to write notes about each photo check that the baby photo album has a memo section next to each photo or a space under or above the photo pocket.

Another option is to write notes about a photo or group of photos on a piece of paper the size of a photo pocket and slide the paper into a photo pocket.

Album cover materials

Consider whether you prefer the cover of your baby’s photo album to be cloth or fabric, leather, padded, wood, handmade paper, silver plated, mother of pearl. So many choices! I have also seen a baby book made out of interleaving rows of satin ribbon.

If you like a fabric or cloth covered baby book here are some different fabric pattern options to consider:

  • Plain
  • Polka dots
  • Toile
  • Gingham
  • Chambray

What would you like your baby's album cover to made out of?

Illustrations

Consider also whether you would you like any illustrations on the front cover of the photo album.

Here are some illustration options:

  • Baby carriage
  • Zoo animals
  • Butterfly
  • Sports illustrations
  • Rocking horse
  • Teddy bear

Other Cover Options

Would you like to be able to insert a photo on the front of the album?

Would you like to be able to label the photo album on the spine?

Would you like to personalize the photo album with monogrammed letters?

Album Interior

How would you like the photo album to look like on the inside? The backing behind the slip in photo pockets in albums are usually white, black or clear.

Baby keepsakes

Consider whether you would like to preserve baby keepsakes or memorabilia as well as your baby's photos.

Some photo albums come with a matching baby keepsakes storage box and baby book. This is a great way to store all those baby keepsakes such as hospital bracelets and baby ultrasound photos and also keep track of baby’s milestones.

Baby Photo Album Features

Here is a summary of features to look for when buying a baby photo album:

  • What size photo does the photo album hold? Is it a 4 x 6 photo album, a 5x5 photo album or 5x7 photo album etc?
  • What is the capacity of the photo album?
  • What is the initial capacity of the photo album and maximum capacity of the album if the album takes refills?
  • How many photos are able to be displayed on each page?
  • How can the photos be displayed on the page? Horizontal photos only, vertical photos only or both horizontal and vertical photos?
  • How is the photo album bound?
  • Does the photo album accept refills?
  • Is there a memo space next to the photo pocket?
  • What color is the photo album available in?
  • What is the photo album cover made of?
  • Are there illustrations/art work on the cover?
  • Is there a photo insert on the cover where you can slide in a baby photo?
  • Can the photo album spine be labelled?
  • Can the photo album be personalized with monogrammed letters?
  • What color is the backing behind the photo sleeve?
  • Best wishes in your search for the perfect baby photo album.
